Florence, Italy – Studying Abroad in Florence, Italy WEEK #2

Ciao! Come read about my second week studying abroad in Florence, Italy!! This week was full of good food and exploring Florence!

Monday

School is starting! This semester abroad I am taking classes through the Instituto Lorenzo de Medici where I am completing classes for my marketing minor. I got super lucky and only have class on Tuesdays and Wednesdays allowing me more time to travel. While abroad I am taking a cooking class on the Culture of Italian Cuisine, Fashion Marketing, Retail Management, and Luxury Brand Management. Since I don’t have Monday classes I spent the day grocery shopping and preparing for class.

Tuesday

Tuesday was my first real day of classes; the “studying “abroad in Florence part of this adventure. I had my fashion marketing class in the morning which I find to be very interesting and then I had my cooking class where our chef made us artichoke risotto. Usually, we do the cooking with him but for the first class he cooked for us. After classes we had a free group dinner at the Palace Borghese.

Wednesday

On Wednesday I went to lunch at Pasta Fresca again because who doesn’t love a good filling bowl of €6 pasta and lemon soda. Then I headed to my classes for the day followed by a night out at the nearby Irish Pub for karaoke night then went to YAB for clubbing.

Thursday

Thursdays are my favorite day of the week here because I don’t have classes making it so I have the freedom to explore Florence, go for walks, catch up on content and homework, or leave early for the weekend to travel. I started my morning with a cappucino then got some homework done, hung out with friends, and went out for the night.

Friday

On Friday my roommate and I started our day by checking out the Boboli Gardens. For students the entry fee to visit the gardens right now is €6 with student ID. The gardens were super pretty, but there are a lot of stairs and I would recommend spending at least 2 hours here, and checking to see what parts of the garden are open before you go. Friday night we went to Ostaria dei Centopoveri for dinner. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Florence so far. They have a large selection of items on their menu. I got a pizza and we split a bottle of wine.

Saturday

On Saturday, I tried the “world’s best sandwich shop” called Pino’s which is conveniently located one street away from me. Pino himself was there making our sandwiches. I ordered the “Poker” sandwich. It has salame piccante, fontina, peperoni, spinaci, and salsa piccante (spicy salame, fontina cheese, peppers, spinach, and hot sauce). Overall, I thought it was good, but not the best I’ve had. Definitely go here if you like lots of toppings on your sandwich.

Sunday

On Sunday I was feeling a bit homesick so I decided to go for a long walk around the city. I walked along the Arno River to the Piazzale Michelangelo, the famous sunset spot in Florence. Once there, I walked around and explored the rose gardens behind it. Eventually, I made my way to the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte and the Porte Sante Cemetery. The grounds were super pretty and the views of Florence were a little better in my opinion from this viewing point than the Piazzale Michelangelo. Then I walked back towards the river and went home.
